Linda Fleming
Linda Fleming is one of the Bay Area's most prominent sculptors, known for her longstanding exploration of how complex, otherworldly constructions evolve out of simple geometric forms. Her works express her interests in such diverse subjects as particle physics, psychological states, ancient history, industrial materials, and veils of curving space. Newer works, such as "Grey Matter," break out of the rigid geometric format of her previous work, from a series using meandering, curving lines. When constructed, these forms reflect the impression of a net or a weaving that encases in a womblike fashion.
Fleming was born in Pittsburgh, Penn., and received her education at Carnegie Mellon University and the San Francisco Art Institute. Her work has been exhibited extensively throughout the United States and is represented in major public and private collections, including the Oakland Museum, Berkeley Art Museum, Albuquerque Art Museum, Cantor Center of Visual Art at Stanford University, First Bank in Miami, Fla., Runnemeade Sculpture Park in Woodside, Calif., and Laumeier Sculpture Park in St. Louis, Mo. Fleming's work was exhibited at the SVMA (Sonoma Valley Museum of Art) in the fall of 2007. She is currently the chair of the Sculpture Department at the California College of the Arts (CCA) in San Francisco and Oakland.
